In 2011, OLCLC installed Pike’s Place, named for founding member of the Center, Connie Pike. This outdoor playspace includes areas for gross motor skills and sensory exploration. The design of our playspace is based on principles from Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods, whose tenet is that “exposure to nature is essential for healthy childhood development and for the physical and emotional health of children and adults.”
Areas for exploration include a discovery bin, a worm composter, and a native wildlife garden. Centers for imagination and role playing include a stump table, a playhouse, and the willow tree village huts. Gross motor skills and coordination are developed on the berm slide, bike path (tricycles, plasma cars), and climbing boulders.
“Time in nature is not leisure time; it is an essential investment in our children’s health.” — Richard Louv
